Putin says Turkey 'priority' for Russian foreign policy
| Quote: |
MOSCOW, February 13 (RIA Novosti) - Russia considers ties with Turkey to be a foreign policy priority, the Russian prime minister said on Friday.
"Russia is Turkey's number one partner in terms of trade turnover," Vladimir Putin told Turkish President Abdullah Gul, who is on the first day of a four-day official visit to Russia.
The Russian prime minister said that the trade between Russia and Turkey totaled $32 billion in 2008, adding that "Turkey is a priority in our [Russian] foreign policy."
Gul, whose current visit is his first to Russia since becoming president, also appraised relations between the countries and invited Putin to visit his country.
"We want to see you in our country and invite you to Turkey," Gul said.
Russia is a major energy exporter to Turkey, pumping natural gas across the Black Sea through the Blue Stream pipeline, the largest Russian-Turkish energy project to date.
Turkey is also one of the most popular destinations for Russian tourists, helping boost a sector that is an important foreign-currency earner for Turkey. |

Abdullah Gul went to Russia in order to convince the Russians to revive the Blue Stream II project that bypass Bulgary, Romania and Greece and comes directly and exclusively from Turkey... (something tells me that the Nabucco pipeline is too litlle!)
They got RED for that but Russian companies are involved in major Turkish competitions such as the S-400, TOR-M2, KORNET-E and Mil Mi-28 with strong posibilities to win.
Moreover the Russian Federation looks forward to construct nuclear power stations at Turkey.... _________________ live today like there is no tomorow and tomorow like you've never lived before...

|
|
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and his Turkish counterpart, Abdullah Gül, have confirmed that Medvedev will pay a visit to Turkey in May, the Kremlin press service announced, noting that both leaders agreed that this visit will be of “key” importance in the next period of Russian-Turkish bilateral relations.
Medvedev and Gül had a telephone conversation upon the latter’s initiative on Saturday when they exchanged views on the Caucasian region, while Gül expressed his appreciation for Russia’s contribution to the international efforts to achieve progress on the Nagorno-Karabakh settlement, a statement by the Kremlin press service said.
The both sides expressed satisfaction with the joint work in the Black Sea region and discussed European security issues, including the Russian initiative to develop a treaty on European security.
The central event in Russian-Turkish relations in the near future will be the planned visit by the Russian president to Turkey, the press service said, noting that the agreement on the visit planned for May was confirmed during the conversation.
The talk between Gül and Medvedev came days after Medvedev hosted Armenian President Serzh Sarksyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in the Krasnaya Polyana ski resort near Sochi last Monday for talks on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, a territorial dispute between Baku and Yerevan.
Russia, along with France and the United States, is one of the three co-chairs of the Minsk Group of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), which has striven to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict for more than 17 years.
