I promise to El that this is the last time I make a comment different from the subject (my apologies El, but I have to reply to Mix and to those who followed our discussion here!).
Mix, you are not allowed to comment on OUR History. We know very well who we are.
In 1829 the powers which permitted (yes, permitted!) the Christians of the Ottoman Empire to start the revolution (because they were an obstacle for previous revolutions!), they had in their plan to weaken the Ottoman Empire, if not to totally destroy it.
Those powers, which signed our independence, called us "Greeks", and identified us with the ancient people who were living in Illirycum millenia ago. This was a big historic lie, which starts back from Charlomagne, and his Franks. But they had a reason to do it: because they did not want a new power to be born, in the dusts of the Ottoman one...
When Charlomagne (8th century AD), the conqueror of the Franks, occupied the today's Italy, he named himself "Emperor of the Romans", and he named the REAL Romans, of New Rome (Constantinople) as "Kingdom of Greece" (sic).
There was never "Eastern" and "Western" Roman Empire: there was only one Roman Empire. The Franks called themselves "Roman", but it is their problem, like the today's Bulgarians of Skopje call themselves "Macedonians".
The fact was the the Roman Empire was a multinational and multilingual Empire, where the Hellenic Language was the common spoken language. An example: the first Roman historians wrote in Hellenic. Apostol Paul wrote his Epistoles (including the Epistole to the Romans!!) in Hellenic...
To which Romans are you referring as "conquerors" of "Greece"?!! This is very inaccurate historically! In the same way the Spartans were conquerors of the Athenians, and the Macedonians of almost all Ilirricum...you are talking absolute nonsense, but you simply copy the axis of the Anglosaxon historians, who simply follow the same lie (like our Korais...).
Latin was of course a spoken language, too, but Greek (Hellenic) was the common. There was no citizen and Emperor who did not speak Greek...
Charlomagne knew very well what he was doing: he kicked out the Roman Pope, and he placed in his position a Frank Pope. The ""Schism"" which took place in 1054 was not a schism between "Romans and Greeks", as it is said by the West, but a schism between Romans and Franks!
The today's Pope is the descenant of the Franks of Carlomagne: this is his Heritage!
Those people invented the name "Byzantium", and even gave a negative meaning to it...because they hated the real Romans.
Find me a single text which refers to "Byzantium"...the citizens of Constantinople knew themselves as Romans, like any other Greek speaking Christian citizen of the Empire...
Romanity itself includes Hellenism. It is a superset of it. But it does not stop there...people in the so-called (falsly!) "Byzantium" preserved scripts from the ancient writers, and they were learning about them in Panspoudastirion, something equivalent to the today's university...but they were not only descenants from ancient Greek tribes, but also from Christianised Persians, Armenians (we had Armenian Emperors!), Skythes, Jewish...and many many others...
You are wrong. WE are the real Romans! Romanity refers to an ethnicity, not to ethnic origins! The Turks were calling us "Rum", and the Patriarch of New Rome was "Rum Patriarch" for them...the land were there were lots of Romans "Rumeli"...
The Turks here are correct...
Constantine Paleologos, and ALL his predecessors, were signing as "King and Emperor of the Romans".
My relatives came from the Black Sea: in the Pontic Dialect we characterize ourselves as "Romans"...
So, you should not really speak, if you do not know...find me a SINGLE text, till 1829, where we do NOT characterize ourselves as Romans! I challenge you!
Read Gheorghius Phrantze's Chronicle: if you go to the General section, of this forum, I give a link for it...he was the Protovestiarius of the Empire, under Constantine Paleologos. Read his text...we are simply Romans...
By the way, the Serbians denied help, when Constantine Paleologos asked from Serbia and, in addition, they gave their cavalry to Mehmet II. Plus they did not allow the Hungarians to pass from Serbia, in order to help us...read the Chronicles of the 15th century...
One more reason not to comment about our identity...
