| Announcement: 10 Venezuelan Troops Die in Helicopter Crash |

CARACAS, Venezuela —A helicopter crash killed 10 Venezuela National Guard troops who were on an anti-drug trafficking mission, an official said Saturday.
The crash occurred in the southwestern state of Apure, which borders Colombia, Friday afternoon, shortly after the Russian-made Mi-17 chopper took off from a clearing, National Guard Gen. Luis Alfredo Motta told state-run television.
"While searching for a group of drug traffickers ... this unfortunate accident occurred," Gen. Motta said. "It must be noted that these young men died while performing their duties."
Of the 10 who died, three were officers and seven were enlisted soldiers, said Gen. Motta. He didn't indicate whether there were any survivors.
Venezuela has become a major transit line for traffickers smuggling Colombian cocaine to the U.S. and Europe, according to U.S. officials.
