The Turkish air force has received its first of 16 McDonnell Douglas F-4E Phantoms to be upgraded under a $24 million deal with local supplier Aselsan.
Dubbed Simsek (Lightning), the project will equip the strike aircraft with new avionics, navigation and secure digital communications equipment, plus replacement flight software and improved mission planning equipment. Related structural renovation work is being conducted by the air force's 1st air supply and maintenance centre in Eskisehir.

Boeing is working to broaden the offerings of its Unmanned Airborne Systems division through development of a surveillance aircraft — powered by a hydrogen-fueled Ford compact truck engine — that will be able to loiter at high altitudes for up to four days.
The Phantom Eye prototype, now being assembled by Boeing Phantom Works in St. Louis in collaboration with the Kent-based Unmanned Airborne Systems unit, is to fly in early 2011, said Phantom Works spokesman Chris Haddox.

Russian pilots to be replaced with nationals - Iranian transport minister
Russian commercial pilots flying for Iranian airlines have to leave the country within two months, the Fars news agency quoted Iranian Transport Minister Hamid Behbahani as saying on Saturday.
"Upon an order from the president [Mahmoud Ahmadinejad], the Road and Transport Ministry has given a two-month period, after which all Russian pilots will have to leave the country," Behbahani said.

Chinook pilot was shot between the eyes by a Taliban bullet - but flew on and saved all 20 aboard.
Flight Lieutenant Ian Fortune, 28, had flown in to pick up casualties as a firefight raged between American and Afghan forces and heavily-armed rebels near Garmsir in Helmand Province.

Su-25 combat jet crashes in Azerbaijan, pilot killed
A fighter plane of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces crashed on Wednesday during a training flight, killing the pilot, the country's Defense Ministry said.
A Su-25 Frogfoot close air support aircraft crashed in the Shamkir district in northwest Azerbaijan at about 5 p.m. local time [13:00 GMT], the ministry said.
An investigation into the cause of the incident has been launched, the ministry said.

Four people are reported to have died after an Indian naval aircraft crashed during an acrobatics display in the city of Hyderabad.
The plane is believed to have come down in a residential neighbourhood of the city.
Indian TV news channels showed a large plume of smoke rising from the crash site.
The pilot of the downed plane is reported to have ejected before the crash.
The crash came on the opening day of the India Aviation 2010 exhibition, a civil aviation show.

SEOUL, March 2 (Yonhap) -- Two F-5 fighter jets crashed into a mountain near Gangneung,
about 237 kilometers east of Seoul, during a training mission on Tuesday, South Korea's defense ministry said.
The safety of all three pilots has yet to be confirmed, it said, adding a search is under way.
